I'm sure you veteran players have a way around this as we have just finished our brick wall and don't particularly want to be giving out keys or access to my key alt.
Get a village idol up, put a crossroad near it in the center of your main village or keep. Then place one outside. Take the sign from the one outside, then place it on the crossroad by your idol. (Don't ever take signs from the crossroads by your idol, though, as you don't need anyone warping to them.) This will allow you to warp to your idol to get inside, then use the crossroad by your idol to warp outside, giving you a secure one-way public outlet, but the only way inside would be a member of the village (or raid/sneaking in somehow).
This setup is good too for a loosely knit village of hermits, as everyone can have their own little compounds outside the village, but still be able to safely access the village (they idol warp in, can use the CR to get out, and hearth warp back to their satellite compounds). If some individual gets killed and loses their keys, only their personal compounds are at risk, not the central village or village keep.
Edit: oh yeah, for travel weariness, at village idols and major crossroad hubs, I usually leave an urn nearby, with a bucket of wine and a couple glasses, and then fill it with extra tobacco.
