It's mining past the first tile that'll kill you. If you're on natural floor and mine in, you're fine, it's connecting mined tiles that will cause cave in's.

Ahh okay, I must've missed that earlier in this thread then. I just hope I don't get smooshed.

Nope, that's pretty much been the standard, you could normally avoid that by snake mining, but that's gone. Connecting mined tiles are the enemy, get supports, mine in the radius (Although I really do hate that it's a circle, what are we doing, playing a game with Hollywood celebrities?)

Yeah should really be a square around, instead of circles. Makes it hard to know what's actually on and what's not.
EDIT: Not square but a squarey circle.. You know what I mean

Soo... Mining one tile from a cave or mine tile, caves you in? Since you can't build mine support on a mine tile, but can on a cave tile (unless it's a exception).

Well looking at the information again, the circle just needs to go over the tile more than 50% for it to touch the 'center' of the tile.
You can tell if the edge of the circle touches the corners of a tile on two corners.

just remeber, if the tile is covered by over half of the radii, you're safe, anything less and you are not.

Last world I found 3 nodes just by mining on the walls of a cave. That's what I plan on doing this world, I got the cave but haven't started mining yet

I haven't started mining yet in this world, but in all my previous experience, I have never been lucky enough to find a vein of any decent metal on the edge. Snake mining helped a bit with that, but even so, it's going to be interesting.

Q18 Iron, on the edge. Also, I mined it thinking snake mining was still working, and caused a cave in, once. Got like 20 pieces of ore before that. It's not that hard to depend on a slight bit of luck, and what's the worst that could happen? :P

I nearly died by taking roughly 200 damage from a cave-in that was caused by attempting to dig near where I already had dug.

W = Wall-tile
C = Cave-tile (I.e. natural part where you can walk)
P = Tile where I am standing:

So behold:
W W W
C C C

Then I go attempting to dig the W in the middle =>

W W W
C P C

Then I move to where the W used to be and try to dig the wall to the left of the W:

W P W
C C C

When trying to dig that left W, I took either 150 or 200 damage from cave in. Worst part was: I had used rustroot above ground to locate that there is vain a few squares behind that cave wall, but to get there I need to go through the walll.

Evidently the damage scarred me for life.

Would be better if we had two forms of mine supports: one less effective but without metal requirement, one more effective but with metal requirement.

So, I've found a cave. I know from past experience that when you mine a wall tile and find stones, there's no metal vein present. However, what does it mean if you mine a wall-tile and get neither stones or ore? I didn't see anything about it in Sevenless' guide.
