You should get a Palli up first (ok it can be bashed too but not as easy as just a fence) this should protect your stuff a bit (arrows/ stones go through Palli or BW anyways) - or better search for a better safer area (spawn Alts in the wild to look for a good one that suits your needs)

People playing this game can be nasty. repeatedly, instead of just stealing all valuable stuff, griefers also broke my cupboards making lots of stuff go into the black stuff surrounding the indoors.

Unfortunately since w7 has already been up 6 months palibashers are really common and starting to play is bit ill-advised, though you can learn and try out many things to prepare you for w8.

I know how you feel, I got through this too. I started to play this world very late, since I missed the beginning of w7 and I got very little time to play because of my little baby boy. When I first started I encountered a raider too. He came back to visit me every week to destroy whatever progress I made. I built a pali and thought I was safe from him, but no he found a tiny gap he could fit through. (I built my pali next to a cliff and didn't notice the gap until I saw him squeezing through it ) He never killed me though, he just had a lot of fun knocking me down and stealing my keys and boats again and again and again. Well finally I moved. But sure I found my pali bashed in again, it happens when you start to play so very late and people around you are already developed so much.
Maybe you can find someone you can join, so maybe together you can become stronger fairly fast.
