There's no way to tell how far away we are from a world-wipe. It could happen this week due to a major update or maybe data-corruption (very unlikely), or it could happen next year or the year after.

Why do I sometimes see people suggesting to keep your hearthfire indoors/in a cellar? Does this prevent tracking or something?

You can summon someone at their hf and kill them by tracking the scents they left.

I know that, I'm wondering why you'd be better off keeping your HF indoors rather than just anywhere inside your palisade generally? Would someone be able to even find your HF via tracking if it was indoors? Would the tracking marker lead them to the door of the building?

The house is in a different layer but i don't think it would confuse it. Your not really safer by putting it in a house or cellar.

some people try spawning new hf by your hs (sometimes lucky guess, sometimes your weak pass) and you can prevent it from happening if your hf is indoors.
also, when it is just outside, people can see whether you are online or not (and may decide to camp your hf), people can destroy your hf easily if its only palisaded, and so on.

btw, indoor hf can be tracked too.

Just gonna add one slight thing to this: if you keep your hf indoors you're preventing yourself from being summoned over distance and shot to death by a sling/bow (this is only the case if your hf is in view distance of your wall).
