When prospecting, do the results point to the 'nearest' piece of ore or the 'center' of the vein?

If I drop a mineshaft where the prospect results say I have ore, am I possibly wiping out most of the vein in the process?

Make the mine hole inside the node, at the centre.
Digging the few safe tiles around the mine hole should give you enough metal to make some supports.
