That's risky if you don't have mine supports yet
Make the mine hole inside the node, at the centre.
Digging the few safe tiles around the mine hole should give you enough metal to make some supports.

I recently managed to discover iron with prospecting and we created a mine hole. We've been getting a lot of q10 ore which is fine for nugget/support building and recipe discovery, but we're really trying to get better stuff. Do ore nodes work like clay nodes? If I keep digging around, will I eventually start finding higher quality ore or am I just wasting time digging off in random directions? I've hit the "wall" of the node where I was just digging rocks to the west and south fairly close to the square created by the hole, and I already know that there isn't any ore in the north wall. I'm digging to the east now, but is it a wasted effort? Is this entire node just q10?
