No. Prospecting only shows you what is on the layer directly below you, thus you'd end up on layer 1.

Thats what I was trying to say:

Surface (Ore detected below)
Layer 1 (Ore is here)
Layer 2 (but a shaft from the surface will end up here)

Edit:

I think i am getting confused by the wiki:

Since the 1/11/2011 restart, Mine Holes will now lead you to the second layer of the world, wich can also be acessed by cave entrances.

but the bit about the cave entrance leads me to now thing that this second layer is just Level 1.

The wiki is correct. The first layer is the "outside world." It's us players that have muddied it a bit. The levels usually refer to which underground layer the mine is actually on, so the surface would actually be L0, caves L1, layer below that L2, etc. so that it's called a L1 mine, L2 mine, L3 mine to L5 mine, the last level that exists.

All characters get wiped at a world reset. If you have been gone for more than a few weeks, the first thing you should do when coming back is check the announcements for anything about a new world. The world was reset in September due to hardware and software malfunctions. And has been running (relatively) stable since. (See the World 6 announcement thread.) Welcome to life in an alpha/beta environment.

Is it possible to appoint another Chieftan and replace the old one after the first has already been appointed?
It hurt itself in its confusion!

I believe so yes. I don't even think you need to remove the old chieftan before replacing them.

Is there a way to seal a gap between a fence/wall and a cliff to the south?

Think I may have mucked up building my hermitage. :/

You've mucked up nothing, that is a wonderful experiment with easily destroyable constructions that will not actively detriment you and which will serve you well as knowledge in the future. You can hold shift to unalign a construction from the grid while playing it and put it to the west or east of the gap to block the hole. After doing so, always test to make sure you can't slip through!

A second part of my question would be: is it possible to have the LS and Chieftain characters on the same account? How would I do this?
