Using bows in general is a waste of time though, slings are fast enough and by the time you can use good ranged weapons you could probably just stab or cleave a beast anyway.

Nope, it can be placed over cave passages, cave halls and even over cave ponds. It will just spawn the mine hole floor instead of the terrain that's underneath it.
Where it can't be built is in the no-dig radius of a natural mine entrance and anywhere it can hit any building or other artificially created stuff that's below.
