We all have to learn how to mine at some point. If we didnt have a cave in now and then to teach us would we not be so careful to use supports?

Use apoclite client when mining. You can use the safer mining script included with it that prevents you from mining tiles that will cause a cave in. Of course, you need to build some supports first.

Yeah but everyone on the island has been inactive for 3 months or more. Some of the people have been inactive since I started playing so who would I trade with except I know a friend who knows of an active village that's further away. Also would one or 2 boulders really drain 207 HHP?!

If you're familiar with the numen system, you can make sacrifices until you can use forge prayer a couple times to get nuggets for the initial support. Make sure you're near a node when you put that first one, though, so you have easier access to nuggets for future ones.
