I'm not strong enough to mine and don't you think I would have been careful I mean I do know a tiny bit about mining, however I to for see blunt-forced head trauma in my future because I don't know how to avoid it before you have the metal to make supports without being super careful.

Mine the first tile only, make gaps between the tiles you mine, once you get metal, make a support. The chance of cave-ins is extremely low in this case, and even if they happen, you are very likely to survive them.

I rly don't understand why people suggest praying for nuggets.

Ok I have a question everybody. I have 31 strength and q10 stone axe so am I anywhere even close to mining because it doesn't seem like it. Also I have been looking for bear to get bear cape and I have only ever found one in the history of my play time and it got away. I had been searching for a real life weak and are they really that rare or am I just super unlucky

Unlucky as bears aren't terribly rare. As long as you're searching forests that aren't claimed with personal claims, as those will prevent wild animal spawns on them, you should run into a bear every few hours or so.

As for how much strength you need and the tool quality, that depends on the rock you're trying to mine.

What message are you getting when you try to mine rock?

Mining ability = sqrt(Strength*Tool Quality), as I'm sure others have told you.

That means right now you have sqrt(31*10) = 17 mining ability rounded down

Literally I was typing this chat to ask more about why I have had bad luck with bears and why'll I was typing I had the game up and one walked right up to me. It was lvl 10 to I nearly crapped my pants.

Edit: ok I've killed the bear now and I discovered that the bones and teeth were q111 and the hide was q63. when I saw that I almost cried I mean holy crap my luck has changed.

Because doing this enough to get a support (a whopping 2 nuggets) takes like 3 minutes tops, even full change (unless you don't have access to anything but branches, but if you're looking for metal you should have the basics covered). Whereas scratching to find a node is a decent way to locate metal, actually happening upon ore, hoping you found a tile with a decent amount, taking it back, letting it cook, and hoping one turns to bars can take a bit more. If you have the two to do a support and find a node while you're out, you can start pumping out actual quantities of ore sooner.

Praying for nuggets for a constant supply = bad. Doing it twice to kickstart your industy = not bad. Not dying while mining = priceless.

As a side note, I keep my key alt full trad since it doesn't have to do anything else. That way if, by some crazy reason, the case arises that I'm out of my normal supply (chance of this is like .0001%), I can get the nugs in seconds and all it required me to do was move the key alt inside while I played other accounts.
Zen always wins.

because most people are turned off by the idea that no matter what they do they'll always be behind the botters and people with outrageous skill levels, and evil foreigners that come to raid their lands

Multiple causes. This is a rather difficult concept to tackle though.
1) Lack of updates on an alpha game. There's a lot that can be done with the game and a lot that clearly needs to be done. Without work actively being put into this version, a lot of people opt to hold off.
2) Older world. Many prefer a fresh start in a world that isn't cluttered with old claims and dhelmers.
3) Permadeath. This concept isn't for every game or for everyone. It's okay to not like it but that means this game isn't for you and this is true for a lot of people.
4) The devs want to keep hype to a minimum. JLo are going out of their way to keep things quiet so that only the most dedicated few stick around for the early Hafen testing to prevent players who are more interested in a finished game from burning out.
5) Griefing. There is no solid stronghold of power enforcing law in the hearthlands this world so there's a lot of griefing. This turns many people off as they want to carebear it up in a quiet garden without interruption.
6) It's a small indie game. Despite what many people think, most indie games aren't made to house populations over a few hundred people. Even games like EVE online only had a small user base for years until it exploded in popularity. Haven isn't developed enough to handle a population that's too large just yet. Ask anyone who has tried to participate in a fight with 20 or so people in it, the server lags and grinds and no one can do anything. Practical issues of space and growth also need to be tackled before Haven can handle more users. For several years the server itself couldn't handle more than 300 users on at once or else it would begin to lag like heck.

I think that covers most of the big reasons.

I also think another reason is it takes so long to level up your attributes. Most people don't want to spend a really long time to get somewhere in the game although personally this is one of the things I like best about this game. You can't just jump in and then be powerful you got to work to get to that point. Also another reason like you said is griefing. It's fairly easy to grief and there is no justice system except for the people, But again this is one of the thing that I think makes haven and hearth awesome I like the idea of people having to deal with griefers and for the people to decide what to do with them.

Haven... reminds me of an article I read once about the stanford prison experiment. What happens when you put good people in an evil place, that's what haven is.
The people who go into the game with peaceful intentions end up become warriors themselves, pillaging and murdering in their wake.
The rangers who strive to protect others end up becoming what they hunt.
This game is a social experiment and I think it proves that there is no such thing as a good or bad person. Give a human power.. just a tiny bit of power over others and it will corrupt them quickly.
That's why haven is fun :)
Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy
