It's odor of tresspassing and right clicking the ground with the scent doesn't seem to work, what am I doing wrong?

These scents can not be used to summon:
Trespass
Assault
Every other scent can be used to summon, which includes:
Vandalism (break object)
Theft (steal item/object)
Battery (knock person out)
Murder (kill person)

Does gathering water from people's claims leave scents?

yes - if you taking water or digging clay on claimed water you'll leave vandalism scents that show on the water

That makes sense as you damage the node by gathering clay/water from it.

I remember at one point I went to my q40 spot and realised somebody had claimed it, I had to leave ton of scents to fill 2 barrels. Lesson: Claim your nodes, if you don't like idea of hogging it to yourself leave runestone with HS so you can give rights to your neighbours or something.

Or you can put the claim where others can get to it without leaving scents. There's downsides for both, but beats losing it all together.

It means the person who sent it chose that as their post icon. It's the same deal making threads, you have the option to include a post icon. It's usually rare because most people don't care.
