1) Be familiar with your neck of the woods. Know if there are busy rivers, foragers hitting local flora, hunters out hunting bears, or active claims/villages. Settle in a spot that'll draw as little attention as possible when a giant red deer skull pops up on the map.
2) Make sure villagers aren't leaving criminal scents around the map willy nilly. It makes easy to track you down if there are scents leading right to you.
3) Try not to settle too close to large, aggressive factions. This ties back in to point 1. In world 4 the #1 reason I'd have to port over to some village being raided was because they settled right next to a raiding camp. Though in World 5 my group settled next to a raiding camp too, but we knocked it over and killed them all. So don't settle next to one unless you have the muscle to deal with them.
4) Like ZZ said, brick walls block palibashers. You need a ram to break a brick wall. It's an intense amount of resources and work though so whether you go through with it or not is up to you.
