If I build my crossroads right next to a wall (as in [wall tile] [crossroad] [open space]) is there a chance of the character teleporting inside the wall, or will they only teleport to open space?

Shouldn't happen at all, somebody tried a similar trick against me in my old days next to my palisade using hearthfire-spawned alts - none of the hearthfires spawned by this method landed over my wall.

What about a village idol? I know that with one of my idols its in the corner of my claim and even though there are several tiles away from the BW I sometimes get transported outside my BW. I do have some items right next to the idol taking space. I don't know if the opposite would work, building an idol right up against someones BW and filling the tiles so the only free space is on the other side of the BW.

It should work. You won't get teleported into used space (stuff with crates, boats, etc), but you can get teleported to places a couple tiles away from the idol. I have a village in a cave, and before I dug out the part around the idol I sometimes got stuck in unmined tiles this way.

People still used village port-long-distance to raid even this world so yes, it does work to jump over the walls.

...but only if the tree has reached its final growth stage (stage 6). Before that, it just regenerates whenever it reaches a new stage. And your tree may be stuck in stage 5 forever, in which case it will never regenerate its resources.
