Okay, so I caught a male silkmoth. But I've read that I can't keep it in my inventory or any container too long or it'll die. I could use the river trick to reset its timer, but if I go too far away from it, it despawns. Is it just a matter of luck of finding a female silkmoth while having the male silkmoth in my inventory or close by somehow? I don't see how anyone could start up a silk business from scratch, without needing to trade for silkworm eggs or some insane luck.

It is just a matter of luck, yes. There is no secret trick to finding the correctly gendered other silk moth, you just have to keep running around until you can nab another and it happens to be female.

Considering it take a silkmoth 24 in-game-hours (that's 8 real time hours) to mate or die, its more a case of a some determination then insane luck.
(I don't think the timer on silkmoth's can be reset, but even if it can its not really worth the trouble.)

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Nowadays you can scavenge silk moth eggs from abandoned settlements pretty easily.
