Well, I just got stone working and I saw that I could build wells. But no matter where I try and build them I get a massage saying "Wells must be built near water" Even if I place it next to water. Is this a bug or do I need some other skill to find, under ground sources of water?

You need Hearth Magic to make a dowsing rod. Walk around with the rod equipped and well spots will be shown as puddles.

Also, when you do find a puddle and decide to make a well, pave the tile beforehand. It helps.
