Can Village Banners be destroyed?

Can they be torn down by just anyone or does our authority have to be really low to do this? If one is broken in a chain, do all the others that are not connected also become lost?

Only LS and chieftain can destroy banners if the village has enough authority (50k I think, but I'm not positive). You don't lose disconnected banners, so you can make authority islands off your main village. Takes a ton of linen or steel to cross any appreciable distance, though.
