Stumps?

I'm clearing an area for a grassland because there isn't one within 10000 miles of me so I thought this would be a faster way to find cows/sheep etc. I know a forest without trees will slowly turn into grassland, but do I need to clear the stumps also? Will they just disappear eventually, or will they turn back into trees?

They neither decay nor turn back into trees. Either remove them or they will remain there indefinitely.
Grassland grows even if there are stumps in the region.

Why not just plant grass with Seeds its located under Landscaping (any seed works)

You can remove stumps with any form of axes but a shovel will be able to clear stumps in half the time. Note that despite what quality the tree was before, stumps always gives 4 q10 blocks of wood.

but if you want to plant grass you can use any seed on ploughed land(not carrots grapes or onions)
to plant it

if you want the wildlife spawns, try to put the grass away from the claim as i hear the will not spawn there, although this may have changed

Other than that you can have a grassland full of stumps
