you wont leave a scent if you summon someone and kill them.

when you collect a scent you are given so many of it, depending on how many scents the person left. you can only have one type of scent in your inventory at a time, so you cant say, hold trespassing scents and theft scents at the same time.

when you right click the scent you are given the option to track hearthfire or track perpetrator, and in cases of theft, track stolen object.

depending on what you choose, an arrow will flash and show you what direction to go in (like when you are using a dowsing rod) except it only flashes once, then a cooldown appears on the scent. you will need to do this every time to find out what direction to go in, and each time it uses up a scent.

if you find the hearthfire of the person you are tracking and you can see it, hold the scent of the person in your hand and right click the fire and you will get the option to force summon. if the person doesnt have a hearthfire you can force summon him anywhere by holding the scent in your hand and right clicking anywhere. if the person doesnt have a hearthfire and he started the world from a charter stone you will have to right click on the charter stone while you hold his scent in your hand.

that pretty much explains how tracking works. its very hard to get the hang of it when you first start out but the more you do it the better you get at it.

And to add onto that, If you kill them, and you have theft, you can loot their corpse for stuff, but leaves scents.

by all means please provide the correct explanation rather than saying wrong, sabinati. this isnt about proving you know more than myself, this is providing knowledge to the op who doesnt know anything about ranging.

you misunderstand my intent melzar. i don't want people to read wrong info and think it is correct, that is how people end up thinking dex matters for farming and other things that are just plain wrong.

basically the opposite of your statements are true. murder always leaves a scent, no matter what. you can collect as many scents and as many types of scents as you can find and hold in your inventory. (you can't have multiples of the same specific scent in the same container, i.e. a murder scent for a particular person, though)

of course, and please forgive me for my misunderstanding but when you just said 'wrong' and nothing else that is what gave me the impression

On the subject of scents, how long does it take for them to dissapear?

I left a trespass scent a while ago and now (20 hours later) it's still there while the wiki said it'd dissapear after 8 hours.

Check the table I started up on this wiki post.
If you keep focusing on the shadow behind, you will not see the light in front of you.

Being successful isn't just about hard work and succeeding, it is also about picking yourself up when you fail.
