Help for a new player needed

Postby Shask » Tue Aug 24, 2010 1:04 pm

Well I started in a forest. Read a guide on these forums and farmed 600 learning points just doing stuff like making a lean-to and making random fires. I then bought Hunting, Lumberjacking and Foraging. I didn't know what to do next, so I made a stone axe and started walking. I found some sort of nest and "raided" it but I guess that started combat, I had no idea what to do and the ants (or whatever) killed me. How do I get food? Where do I go from here?

Thanks. What should new players be aiming for? Just gathering lots of LP? I'm currently trying to make a log cabin but I keep getting 1 hit crunched by a boar and then my character goes unconscious

I think you should mainly aim for having fun.

Your secondary goal should be getting Yeomanry, because wild animals don't spawn on claimed land. And, actually more important, it protects your belongings. The rest is up to you.

Ok, a few more questions: How do I stop getting killed by boars? I can't out run it as I run out of stamina.

Also, is the game laggy because it's in early development?

You can drink while you are running to keep your stamina filled. To not get attacked by them in the first place claim your land so they at least won't spawn there. I can also recommend Pachos Client (to be found in the C&I), which has a bigger resolution, so you can see the boars coming.

Not only is it an alpha, but run by two students from their dormroom. If you want a lagfree enviroment, you might want to start donating for a better server. Look at the bottom of the forums for the donate button.

Boars also can't follow you into shallow water, so if you're near a lake or river use that to your fleeing advantage. Another interesting thing to know is that boars have a line of sight, so if you have a tree between them and you then they won't attack.

Adding to what burgingham said, game is laggy because many players are playing right now. Visit the homepage to see how many players are currently on the server. Whenever the number is lower than 290 you should be able to play lag-free. So you might want to adjust your playing times if you can, to avoid lags. If you still have lag even with only, let's say, 250 hearthlings playing then the problem is most likely on your side. Old Java version or crappy computer are two things that come to my mind.

Thanks for the help guys. Do you know any solid way of getting LP? I want to get my exploration up to around 12, I'm on 5 at the moment.

I'm still not really sure what I'm meant to be "doing" though, I mean, when you guys had been playing for around 4 hours, what were you doing?

Don't focus too much on LP. Do what you can to improve your circumstances and the LP will follow.

Build a roundpole fence to keep the boars out, work on your cabin, catch rabbits, roast their meat and dry their skins. Explore a bit, carefully. Have fun and don't die.

for the first few hours i usually would walk around a bit, explore the terrain, like look for rivers, a grassland area, etc that might be nice to build a temporary camp. then build yourself a lean to, a few baskets, catch some rabbits and cook them, forage around a little, etc. you can start storing useful things at your base camp, a few bones maybe for a saw or a fishhook later, foraged items, etc. at some point you want to build some drying racks for your rabbit skins, first priority is a waterskin, then 4 hides for leather for a backpack. so in between building these few things, go on some more exploring trips (watch out for boars and bears). collect any taproots or blueberries or chantrelles you find and return to camp when your inventory is full. keep getting your basic skills and work on your exploration and survival.
