How long can cows survive without food?

So I had a few cows now that have been around for a while for testing purposes. I am wondering how long they're supposed to survive on grasslands without food?

Yeah, I know. But I am wondering, as long as there is grass does that mean they can last forever? :X

It seems that way. Then it's like. What's the point of even feeding them? Less good Q quality cows?

The other puzzling thing is I have had one or two die yet others live and they have all been on grasslands with roughly the same hunger levels. (and no baby cows :X)

grass counts as q10 fodder, and as such, will limit the quality of items you can get from them.
