Crossroads?

OK I have heard a lot about crossroads but I have not got a clue what they are...they seem to be some way to fast travel but that is all I can work out. Also do they have anything to do with the white pillars I keep finding?, they don't seem the same as the rune stones.

Thanks Digdog, I had been putting a space between the the word and typing 'cross road' so it did not come up with anything on Wiki. I am sorry and I don't mean to ask silly questions.

The best to look after something on wiki is start write name like "cross" in search field and wait around 1 second for list of possible pages show ("Crossroads" in this case).
