The higher the quality, the higher the quality of the resulting tree. Then, place the fruit in the filled pot and place the now ready pot onto a herbalist table. The quality of the table also affects the final quality of the tree.
Now, wait 1,5 hours and check the table again.
Now you have a seedling. Sometimes you don't get a seedling, which depends on your nature/industry slider. The farther towards nature, the higher your chance to get a seedling. You always get a seedling at full nature.
Now take the seedling and right-click the ground with it somewhere. You should get a flower-menu popup saying "plant". Use this to plant it and tadah, you planted a tree. Trees grow faster on their natural terrain, i.e. firs grow faster on forest ground. The growing tree will also partially change the ground around it to its natural terrain.
Finally, make sure that nothing is obstructing the growing tree or it will get stunted, meaning it won't be able to fully grow. Make sure no objects are around your tree in a 5x5 tile radius while it grows. This includes other trees and basically all objects you cannot walk over. Pavement doesn't matter.
Trees gain quality as they grow, fully grown trees will have the highest quality.
