What's the best tree to farm?

Postby BluShine » Mon Aug 30, 2010 2:01 am

So I recently decided to try to start quality farming wood. Only problem is that I'm not sure which tree to grow. The wiki has huge holes in the info for trees. It has only spotty info on the amounts of resources you can gather, and even less info about growth rates.

I wish I could offer anything that would help you but instead I can only second the request for this information.

What type of terrain is around you? This will determine how quickly the tree will grow. Off the top of my head.

Coniferous forest - fir or pine trees
Broadleaf forest - Oak trees, maybe birch
Grassland - Apple or Willow trees

Willow's native terrain is Coniferous isn't it?

Anyhow, Fir is generally the one of the best choice due to its speed of growth. I have no idea about the Broadleaf's quickest though. If speed isn't a huge factor, Pine/Oak for Coniferous/Broadleaf is your choice as it yields 3 logs instead of 2.

I don't know what terrain willow trees are native to. They seem to grow alright on grasslands, although not real quick.

If fir trees are an option I highly recommend those as well. Like Dataslycer said, they grow very quickly on the correct terrain.

Best at speed:

Coniferous forest - firs (2 logs, 7 branches)
Broadleaf forest - birches (2 logs, 7 branches) fastest of trees
Grassland - nothing

Best at amount of branches/logs:

Coniferous forest - pines (3 logs, 3 branches) very slow grow speed
Broadleaf forest - oaks (3 logs, 10 branches) twice slower than birches
Grassland - nothing

Solved.

Can I ask for this part? Does it mean, that when I grass the terrain where I want to plant the tree, all trees will grow slower there then in its native terrain? Or is it like if I Plant the correct tree in the self-created-grassland in the area where some type of forest is, the tree will grow ok there (so e.g. Fir tree in the area of Coniferous forest but planted into grassland created via plow/plant grass)?
Thnaks for info anybody.

Grass is not native terrain for any tree. Firs and pines will grow as slow, as in broadleaf forest. Birches, oaks, willows, maples and apples-mulberry-nuts are all from broadleaf, and they will grow as slow, as in fir forest.

You can find maples and some other trees at grass- and hearth-lands, but it doesnt mean that it's their native terrain.
You also can find firs and pines that grow on a mountain, does it mean that mountain is native for them? No. You even can't plant anything there.

And if you plant grass on, for example, fir forest terrain, it will count as grass terrain. So it's very-very bad idea to grass area, where you are going to plant trees.

Unless you're willing to accept that the first few trees you're planting will grow very slow until they manage to convert the soil they're on back into their own terrain.

Indeed. That was an epic fail :/ I am in conifer and wanted to plant Mulberries and Oaks, so I have grassed under them and thought I have converted it to native terrain. Now wondering why the wicked mulberry is still small like carrot :)

Thank you for explanation.

Cheers.
