It appears that "Stone" is too common a word to search for, so I'm afraid I have to make a new topic for this stupid question:

Where do I find/how do I get a simple stone? Specifically, I need it for a stone axe. I have both stoneworking and mining.

You will have to walk away from the starting point. Quite far most likely, and you will find boulders on the ground. just right click those.
The ones who see things differently.

They can also be found in abundance inside of used smelters.

later, when you dig out a cellar to a house you get 16 stone bolders that give hundreds of stone each... This also means a lot of people have boulders just lying around.
