How can I get a friend to join me?

I'm kind of new, so forgive me if this has been covered or is just common knowledge. I'm trying to get a friend to join me, but I don't have enough people to start a village, so it's just me, my house, and my gorgeous onion farm. I'd like him to be able to appear somewhere near me, or at least not start halfway across the world. Is there a way to do this?

Set a hearth secret in your kin list, and have him tell it to the Sherlock Holmes dude in the character creation room. A stairway will appear, and if he takes it he'll spawn at your hearth.
