Chicken feeding

Postby Xgflame » Sat Sep 04, 2010 3:17 am

I am considering building a chicken coop to maintain a supply of chickens. Could i just fence them in a area where i have planted grass and never worry about feeding them? Or do i have to constantly leave seeds to keep them alive?

First off. Good job on deciding to make a Chicken Coop. It's a really big help.

I..what? If you take your chicken out of a coop and place them on a ground they will de-spawn. It is impossible to keep non-domesticated animals in a fence or palisade without them de-spawning. I've tried  (If you leave out chickens they will go away.)

You have to keep a regular supply of food in their coop. You left click the straw, seed, etc. from your inventory and right click the coop. Their quality depends on the quality of food you give them.

You don't leave seeds around, because the chickens never go out of the coop unless you make them. (I take my chickens out for walks because I can. E-Chickens have to be e-fit.)
If you have any more questions feel free to ask or look at the wiki. Cheers, mate.
Lol why u mad tho?

Just a little more info, hens require 2 spaces below them in the coop to lay eggs. The cock can be anywhere in the coop. (At least I think it's the two spaces below the hen...)

There's a picture of a certain chicken coop layout floating somewhere, but It's out of my reach.

Hens don't require space below them to lay eggs, they'll lay eggs in any open spaces. However, eggs that are not directly below a hen will not hatch even if a cock fertilizes them. Once eggs have died, they can never hatch again. Eggs that hatch into chicks also need a 2x2 space in the coop to grow into or else they'll just pop out of the coop and despawn while you're offline.

One last note, food quality will not raise the quality of chickens, it can only lower it. Quality is dependent solely on the quality of the chicken and cock that are mating. So if you have q15 fodder and q20 chickens and q25 chicks/eggs, soon everything will just be q15. However, if you had q15 fodder and q10 chickens, they're stuck at q10.

I'm not sure your ending results are right... I've put in Q 1 Seeds with Q 10 Chickens. They then eventually raised to Q ~30. Its was mostly Q 1-6 Seeds.

That is rather odd DDD and I can offer no explanation for this. It is very visible and apparent when chickens drop quality due to low q fodder so I must ask what kind of conditions were your chickens in to have become Q30 with q1 fodder?
