Running H&H through a proxy

Postby metacognate » Mon Sep 06, 2010 4:35 am

When connecting to the internet, does the H&H client just take the default windows settings for a proxy - like how Internet Explorer and Chrome both use the same settings? Or would I have to change something in the distro of the alternative client I'm using? The default windows settings I'm talking about are in Internet Properties -> Connections -> Local Area Network (LAN) Settings.

Thanks in advance,

I'm not sure how well it works and everything, but I do know that Java keeps its own proxy server settings. You can find them in Java's control panel.

Very unlikely you can get this game much like most games run via a proxy. Mostly this depends on your proxy and if you have control of the proxy. The game appears to use tcp port 80 and 443 as well as UDP 1870.

The large issue is UDP. TCP 80 and 443 work on almost all proxy and many other ports can be set to be allowed BUT they have to issue a CONNECT like they do for 443 so the applications have to be designed for proxy use on non standard ports. UDP is not really supported on proxy but maybe on a firewall. These are very different devices in the way the operate. The only way to play games through a proxy it to open a SSL VPN tunnel to a external gateway and run your UDP traffic though this. Many SSL VPN clients run JAVA so they may or may not work well with other JAVA based application.

You speak of HTTP proxies; SOCKS has no problem with UDP.

Thank you, gentlemen. The java control panel worked; I'm running my own SSH server that functions as a SOCKS proxy from home, so no problems there.
