You need to be next to the fish, yes, so get a boat and sail out to them, or walk until you find a fishing spot next to the shore.

You can usually fish from shore (well, shallows). You're supposed to left click on a nearby water tile with fish, not right click. Oh, and the tile can't be adjacent to land.

In order not multiply threads, I will ask my question here:

How do I catch more exotic fish? Does the type of fish caught depend on time of day or something? Because sometimes I catch inventory full of Roaches and Perches while sometimes I get a lot of Sturgeons in the same spot?

It used to depend on time of day, but I think it's only the phase of the moon now. Try different lures, and both shallow and deep water. Quality also used to matter, but the other day I caught eel with a q30 tin fly and a q10 pole, and you only used to catch ell on tin fly with q100ish equipment, so I'm not sure if it still matters.

Gears?

I think there's a lot we don't know. When I was a mega-noob and tried fishing for the first time, I caught lots of eels..
