Prospecting, mine dectection and Numen

Okay, so using the rustroot extract scans the area for mines, but does it detect mines already built and claimed? I already tested this next to several built mines and got no minerals detected, so i'm just confirming.

Also, is praying for nuggets a reasonable alternative to mining, considering we do not intend to go around stomping on peoples heads with heavy armour?

Rustroot extract only scans for unbuilt mines. The radius is 1000 tiles, so covers a pretty large area- it's relatively easy to check a very big area with enough rustroot. If you're not finding any, move to one of the furthest supergrid boundaries and start there. It also won't detect mines inside caves unless you go into the cave itself (some caves are deeper than 1000 tiles and have no minimap, so be thorough if you're checking one).

Praying for nuggets won't get you far. Use the "map the world" thread to find 'nople, grab a sign and work the agility of one of your villager's high enough to use it and travel there regularly. Trading > praying.

And also if you prospect in caves it sometimes pick up a mine in a different cave.

FYI me and a friend scoured the actual northern boundary of the world after a huge journey. Even in that wilderness, with no people at all, there are no unclaimed mines.
