Beehives aren't known for being too stable, so you may notice that one day you were getting a ton of wax the next day nothing.
Also, make sure you plant stuff near it, as crops grow near it (they pollinate the crops) honey/wax accumulates, it seems that honey comes first and then sometime after you start getting wax.
My suggestion would to just plant a lot of crops near a few and hope for the best, carrots are good because you can replant them daily as opposed to bidaily like other crops.
