use the trough build option to see an indicator for converage areas for any given placement of a trough

Afaik the animals will eat the highest ql fodder first.

Animals still "eat" from a food trough, even if it's on the other side of a fence or obstacle, too. Just as long as they are inside the effect radius they will be fed.

I'm not sure about calves, though, but I think they don't need to physically reach a mother or a milk barrel, but they need to stay in the same area. I haven't actually tested this though so to be safe make sure they have direct access to a milking mother animal or a milk barrel.

Not true. Animals eat east to west and north to south. That's true for troughs and milk for calves.

That's strange. My cows eat west to east. I can see if i can confirm what spectacle and chakravanti said.

Well, the last 4 troughs I fed my cows, they first ate the highest ql.
Then they started eating from east to west. So, not exactly sure how it works.
