Increase the Quality of your Trees

Postby Badger_Bishop » Mon Oct 25, 2010 4:57 pm

Trees? Here is the stuff I have read and the questions I still have after reading them:

http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10795&hilit=Increase+Quality&start=10
1) What factors into getting higher Q trees? Which was explained by the next thread I found.

http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9750&hilit=Increase+Quality&start=10
2) If the Q of water/soil/pot/table make a difference then how do I find higher quality water/soil/clay for pots?

I found this post:
Potjeh wrote:You can, however, raise the quality of burnt tree pots by using successively better planks for fuel (ie use you latest and best trees).
I might have misunderstood it but I think that what he was saying is my friend who has a high carpentry can make Q27 boards, when made into coal and used to recook the pots will increase the Q of the pots? Can anyone confirm this as true or false? I will test it as soon as my carpenter gets online after work.

I've gotten some strange Q's using all the same stuff or so i thought.

For the best trees and to keep upping their quality....raise your farming and on a regular basis up Q your materials. Dex can be important in making the tree pots, carpentry is important in making the tables (And lumber). Get good axe and saw to make best lumber, good clay + dex to make good kiln and pots, farming to grow good fibre for the tables (And replanting of trees) and of course the best water and soil you can find. All of these things (plus as Sabinati said, a small random +/- factor at planting) go into making good trees and continuing to up their quality...remember to rotate out your table and pots as you increase your dex and carpentry and use the better wood (and fibre) you get from your latest trees and string crops. Trees are one of the funnest things in the game to me it just takes dedication an a lot of work and a long term commitment.
This defines and points out some stuff I have figured out/read already, but I am still looking for the answer to my second question.

http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2809&p=31736&hilit=+Increase+Quality#p31736Tree growing in a nutshell!

The answer to question 2 I read somewhere but have been unable to find in order to source is that I have to walk the world, digging for soil and clay, filling my canteen to check the water, and hoping that I get lucky. I guess now I just need to roam around, hoping for luck, and find a source of high Q soil/clay/water to call my own. This is what i have learned about finding good Q soil/water/clay:

This was intended to ask a question and prove that I had done the research and turned out to be a nice little guide for those would-be tree growers. I'd like to see further resources compiled and successful strategies discussed so that others can build their own Q200+ worlds from the ground up.

A good way to lay out your trees for planting, not sure who figured it out but I know Sodom uses it.

Especially the quality chart near the bottom of the first post.

1)Seems you answered yourself
2)Wiki has information on finding higher q resources, basically it's just testing the quality where you are, and keep doing so, can be time consuming but is worth it in the end IF you find something good ;)

2b?) The Treepot formula is ( (Unburnt Treeplanter's Pot Q * 2) + Kiln Q + Fuel Q)/4
Raising your Fuel Q (boards NOT coal), will raise your treeplanter's Q. Clay will also raise it quite a bit so ;)

So you can't fire the completed pot, you have to fire a NEW pot with better Q fuel(that isn't coal)? Guess I misinterpreted Potjeh's quote in the original post.

Bump and added the layout that Sodom uses for planting. Not only is it organized but it looks good too!

I read that chopping down a tree before it is fully matured yeilds subpar wood, is that also true about the seeds you pick off of it? I ask because I want to know if I should be waiting for mytrees to fully mature before I pull seeds or if the first chance I get I should pull and replant seeds. Any wisdom in this are is appreciated.

Trees gain quality when growing for every step except the last, this applies to the wood and all other produce you can get from a tree.
So once the tree is just one stage away from fully grown it's a good time to harvest seeds to work on the next generation.
Once a man has changed the relationship between himself and his environment, he cannot return to the blissful ignorance he left. Motion, of necessity, involves a change in perspective.

On a note related to tree Q, what is up with all my trees not growing anymore? They've been stuck for over 2 weeks now :-( It's pretty hard to build my trees up if they don't grow at all.
