You cannot plant stinging nettles. It is a forageable item and no crop, so it can only be found in forests if you got enough perception*exploration.

Flax and Hemp crops produces Plant Fibres, which is probably the easiest way to amass large quantities of string.

However, drying hides and then making leather straps from them can also be an easy way. Boar skins produces 8 string, fox 4, and rabbit 2.

First off (and this is pretty much something every player needs to have) you should get atleast 10 exploration.

Then go foraging and find a WWW (Wild Windsown Weed), dry it on a herbalist table if you have access to one, otherwise a Drying Frame works aswell.

Once the weed is done drying, it should have turned into a random plant seed, could be carrot, grapes, wheat, or if you're lucky - flax.

Getting most of the seeds as early as possible is definetly an advantage.

For more information, see http://havenandhearth.wikia.com/wiki/Wild_Windsown_Weed and http://havenandhearth.wikia.com/wiki/Farming .

Good luck!

The only way to get straw is to harvest wheat.
Some players may sell it or at least the seeds to you if you ask them.
Save our trees. Say NO to clear-cutting.

For the records, flax and hemp serves the same purpose as in creating plant fibre but hemp can also be harvested a bit early in a previous stage (red leaf) to procure hemp buds instead (but it destroys the seeds and fibre) that can be dried on herbalist tables and smoked for FEP bonus. It also is less graphically laggy than flax.
If you keep focusing on the shadow behind, you will not see the light in front of you.

Being successful isn't just about hard work and succeeding, it is also about picking yourself up when you fail.

Been hunting like a madman for Hamn and/or Flax, to get fibres for a herbalist table, but have not found any. Pictures on the wiki does not show, so I don't know what to look for either. Where do they grow, what do they look like?
