Can't get the hunting to work...

I have a sling, and I have stones in my inventory, but when I try to shoot stuff, I don't get how that's supposed to go down.
Is this the "meter" that is supposed to fill up to the left in my picture?
I've tried shooting ants a few times, and it doesn't seem to have any effect at all. I just shoot and shoot. Should they bleed? Do they have a health meter?

My marksman skill is just 11, but I should still be able to hurt ants, right?

yes, the meter is supposed to fill up, but you lose aim when your target moves, and ants are always moving.

With 11 MM , you aiming bar will take a long time to go up.

If you don't mind waiting, you can wall yourself with fire building signs around a boulder and then kill off herds of aurochsen and mouflons. I suggest you get your MM to about 50 though, it'll make the aiming much faster
