One thing I couldn't understand at the apples and oranges forum and couldn't find any clues from the wiki:
Why do people buy large amounts of linen cloth?

To give a slightly more enlighting answer to your question. Villages need banners to expand their claim and linen takes a lot of hemp (No one uses Flax any more right?) to make the amount of cloth needed for just one banner. It is often just less time consuming for a village to sell their old/ low Q stuff (by their standerds) to hermits for Linen. You see the same effect with bricks where instead of the space needed for the hemp it is the damage to their often high Q clay spots that they want to avoid.
