Combat skills/stats question

Postby Vlad99 » Wed Nov 10, 2010 6:20 pm

played off and on a few times in the past but never really got past making baskets and then i would get killed in one shot by random dudes.

i have read a lot on the wiki and have a good general understanding of the game, i need some help though with combat abilities.

basically what/how high combat skills do i need to have in order to be a moderately effective fighter character that can at least defend myself against predatory players? i know that after this long there are ridiculous characters that are basically unable to be killed by any but a handful of players, but in terms of the average farmer/bearhunter type what do i need in order to be on equal footing?

what about effectively solo hunting boars? deer? bears?

i have a 30 quality militia sword, should i just go melee instead of unarmed?

what about marksmanship? i had 30 marksmanship at one time with a q20 bow and i could not even damage a fox i was attacking, got pretty much discouraged with combat after that. i have read that a sling is a better ranged weapon than a bow for a newbie. if so, why?

thanks!

I believe before the recent update, 150-ish was a decent melee combat/UA for fighting bears, not sure on that though.

After the recent update however, you might need more - I find myself getting owned by level 6 foxes at 70 melee, with a q120 bronze sword and q100+ armor.

Aiming with a bow is so much slower than a sling, 3 times slower I believe. And slings are easier to get ahold of when it comes to quality - trading with sodom for a nice high quality is a step in the right direction.

To defeat other players, the required combat skills actually depends on if it is a newb or a advanced player. But if u want to atleast DEFEND yourself, i'd recommend very good high quality armor and a high quality weapon, around the 200-300 melee combat (higher ofc is better).

About the bow, the best thing is to use a sling with low MM. Bows fire 2 times as slow as a sling, so that means if u have 20 markmanship, that counts as 10. Ranger bow has 1/6 the speed of a sling.

About the damage, i recommend you a sling of around the 50 quality as beginner hunter. When you get better in it, buy a quality 100-200 one.

Surround the fox with cornerposts before you shoot at it.
