What's tree decay?

I saw someone mention this in the announcements about tree decay, and I wondered how it worked?

I am also wondering. I haven't really planted any tress, but there are some out in wilderness when tree spawning was still around. I think some of these trees have stopped growing, is tree decay the reason for this?

tree decay is when they get hit by decay and regenerate bark, branches, boughs and seeds

stunted trees are caused by something being in the way when it tried to grow to the next stage
