Prospecting Tactics

So I've been searching for quite a while for any sort of mine, but to no avail.
I would like to know what other peoples' tactics were for finding mines, and if they were successful. Mine (no pun intended) was to stop at every mudflat or mountain, find the center of the area, and prospect there. Should I be doing something different?

do you know what supergrid you are in?

are you in one that has been fully mapped as part of the known world? if you are, then stop looking for mine, they have all been found and are owned by other folks.

If you are in the outskirts of civilization, like n4e4, n4w4, s4w4, s4e4, then you want to search the forums a bit. there has been many threads with detailed search methods/patterns.

I'd suggest concentrating on prospecting in caves because 99% of all mines out there on the surface are already built.
