I kill...

No, but seriously, you can make a village on your own, you will just have to maintain the authority alone too then.

Villages are started by making a village idol, then having up to 5 people with Yeomanry to right click on it (lawspeaker first), and then clicking "make village". After some dramatic fire animations, a village is created. The cost to create a village is 30,000 LP and it is divided evenly among the founding members. (One person with 30,000; two both with 15,000; etc.)

does the village go away if the authority drops?

in other words can one make a village themselves simply for the purpose of protecting against wall jumpers and not have to farm authority?

I believe (I may be wrong) that having an authority below 50K makes the claim useless.

The village idol starts to decay after authority falls below 50 000. But it can be repaired with stone and it lasts a long time before disappearing, so it's no problem for one person to maintain a village even if he can't grind authority fast enough. Of course the claim will be inactive, but as long as you have a personal claim covering the village, that doesn't really matter.

You have to be careful that no vandals ever reach the idol though, or they will destroy it and the village.

But if it falls low on Auth anyone able to reach the idol and has lawspeaking, can become the lawspeaker even if there is one, and warp inside.

The point of building a village idol to help avoid wall jumpers, is that your village territory expands far enough outside of your walls so that it makes it harder for them to build warp structures near your walls, to warp "over" the walls. if it's simply an idol, it's easy to maintain authority by yourself if you play a couple times a week and have more than 10 INT and CHA.
