[solved] Baking, Turning (Premature?) into ash.

Wondering about something.

Fact: When you over-bake foods it will turn into ash.
How many branches you need to use depends on the item(s) you bake. (available on wiki)

I just checked a oven in witch I backed some breads. (done last time I was logged in)
And one of the four items(same type) was turned into ash. I'm pretty sure I put them all in at the same time, added the branches, and lite the oven.
1a) Anyone has seen something similar to?
2a) Any info available on what might be going on here.

Something that seems similar. I also had some cases where I'm pretty sure I did use the right branch count on baking something, but having them turn into ashes(all, same items) anyway. (only seen at first use of a oven after a login so far.)

Not sure if partial backed items remember there state. But that did not play a role in these instants.

There is a bug that I read about that causes anything left for a long time in an oven to count as having been cooked by 1 branch. This could acount for your trouble. Leaving them in the oven after they are done would cause them to cook for 1 branch too long over all.

I had this happen to me a few days ago. I did a batch of blueberry pies using about 10 ovens. I placed them and lit them all around the same time. I came back after about an hour and about half of the pies were ash, while the other half were perfectly cooked. Other people have access to the ovens, and I just assumed someone had put an extra branch in the ovens or something. It may have been the same bug however.

Aha. Digging around a bit.
  • "Ovens"

So, if you leave bread dough in an oven for two ticks (~6 minutes per tick) it will get baked with just one stick. It will never cook completely without the final branch, and the final branch will never burn it (so it's safe to light the oven with one branch even if the dough has been in there for days). This can be used to great effect in smelters, reducing your coal consumption by 75%. Not much point in saving branches since they're infinite, and if you just use the specified amount for baking (1 for honeybuns, 2 for cakes, 3 for bread, RoBs and pirogis) you don't have to keep track of time.

Not sure if this can account for both cases. But as I also can't remember the (needed) specifics of those cases I'm assuming it is.

Always use 1 branch and only 1 branch for baking. Never use blocks or boards as fuel, as they worth the same as multiple branches. It's not at all clear when ticks actually occur. The most obvious thing would be that baked goods count the number of branches that have burned in total, but due to the bug, they must happen some other time, either instead or in addition.

It seems to me that ticks must just happen periodically, probably regularly every 6 minutes give or take, but the only time objects in ovens and smelters change to the product is after a fuel is burned. If this is the case, it's entirely possible that if you put all the goods into an oven right at the edge of a tick, some of them might have gotten a tick right away. If you put in the right number of branches and light it right away, those ones would burn. I used to fuel with the proper number of branches and remove and reload the oven right before lighting, and I still had it happen twice.

If you use just one branch, though, that can't happen.
Come back two hours earlier.

- So in case-(b) I just got a tick between filling the oven and lighting the oven.
- And in case(a) I just got 1 lucky bread, of the 4, that won the lottery. ;)

1 branch it is.
Thanks.

I had the same problem, but now I try to ensure I always put the fuel in first and then click to start baking as soon as the dough goes in and I haven't had the problem since.
