I built a boat and started fishing out in a lake with jumping fish... but the game constantly makes me stop fishing. Why is this?

Check your bait/string/hook.
If you keep focusing on the shadow behind, you will not see the light in front of you.

bait is used after you catch a fish, so you need to reload the bait. lures don't need to be reloaded each time.
