I got back into this game after leaving it 6 or so months ago. I made a new character with my buddy Vaughn and we're trying to find a place to go where it's deserted... but everywhere I go, especially along the river, there are settlements all over the place! I cannot go 2 minimaps without finding a city or a log cabin! Is it like this throughout the whole game world nowadays? It used to take 2 months to find anyone.

Most of those settlements you see are probably deserted and abandoned:)
If you want unspoiled wilderness, head for the outer grids. New players don't spawn in the two outermost supergrid layers, so the only people there are those who have gone there on purpose.
