Animals keep eating grass

AFAIK, animals health goes down when they eat grass. Now, how can i prevent them eating grass and let them just eat the food in the food through?

No, that also applies to grass. I know because my cows started eating the grass outside of the palisade. But hey, if you have a vagina cannon it's only a small step towards a vacuum mouth.

if a food through is close they eat that first

Animals eat the highest quality food around them (I think grass is probably ql 10). Having higher quality food in troughs around them will cause them to avoid the grass. They also seem to eat in quite a large radius (walls don't seem to affect their psychokinetic eating powers); they seem to be able to get grass about 20 squares away from them.
