Around full moon, in deep water, with taproot, bone hook, earthworm, all ~q10. Do note that deep water is deep water and shallow water is shallow water, the fishing system doesn't actually differentiate lakes and rivers.

Are you the guy that's been selling me all these perches at Buyan market? If yes, you should also try same equipment in shallow water around new moon to get plaice.

The wiki is on crack in regards to fishing. You can't fish in the "river shallow" as you've noted already. The best way to get specific fish is getting out in the water and trying different things... time of day, moon phase, lure, equipment quality, and probably more I can't remember or don't realize. My basic advice to any fishermen is to ignore the fishing section of the wiki in regards to how to catch which kinds of fish.

If all that trial and error seems like too much hassle, it is. But some people (like me) enjoy it. It's just unfortunate that fishing takes a lot of time and is totally unrewarding LP-wise for that time; so I don't do it that much anymore. =/

I have to disagree. Lure fishing is painfully slow, I'll give you that, but bait fishing is not. It takes me like 20 minutes to catch two LCs of fish with earthworms, and digging those up is quite fast if you got a shovel.

That's true, but bait fishing puts you more at the mercy of the other variables since there are fewer types. If you're not in the right time window you're out of luck. With lures I've often switched from one to another as the time changes and picked up where I left off for whatever fish I was aiming for.

Either way a tick of fishing is still the same amount of time and LP, which is crappy. With bait you just get done faster and back to activities that are actually rewarding.

yeah it would be nice if fishing was a bit faster/more lp but then you'd end up with a bunch of afk fishermen everywhere i think

I don't doubt that for a second, unfortunately.

You can fish even tight spots in the shallows, you have to be close to a fish though. The graphic of a fish jumping out of the water needs to be within 1-2 squares of where you click. If you are on the shore or in the shallows and you click in the shallows close enough to the the fish, you drop a line.
