how do i find out roughly where i am on the map? http://havenmap.student.utwente.nl/Preview/
my only point of reverence is a dead village called avalon. (dead as in havent seen anyone around for the past 10 days (=since i started playing again))
oh and a river. that goes east-west....

well, when th e serv comes back up, try looking along the river a bit, you can find some more/better referance points by exploring reletivley nearby

oh yeah i remember ... a long wall.... it goes up and down the river... quite some time... a few patches of paved ground.... one more house (beside my own) and areas that look almost as if its a starting area (all tree's slaughtered )

I'd just echo what zacty said. Finding yourself on the worldmap can be quite a challenge and often what seems quite large to you is teensy on the world map. Explore along any rivers and look for large settlements and established villages then I'd do a ctrl + f for the village name on the world map if you still can't find it, that way it'll show up highlighted on the map, but even then that doesn't help a ton.
