Smoke rising from the ground

I've recently found a few spots on the ground that appears to be cracks, or some other dark stuff, with smoke rising from them. What are those?

sounds like you are seeing 'scents' have you recently gotten the skill 'Ranging'

If you can right-click them and collect it, then those are probably criminal scents. These are left behind when people trespass, steal, attack other people, etc. There's more info about them here: http://havenandhearth.wikia.com/wiki/Scent

Yeah, could have been a scent. saw quite a few over at a neighbour, but could not klick on them but I guess they were on someones claim. Looked like gray smoke, though I don't see so well and I got scared by a wooden fish before I could remember to take a screenshot. But they are gone now.
