I need to make a sling, and I was wondering what an easy way for a newbie to get string is?

string refers to many items, the easiest to get for you is probably spindly taproot. you need foraging and a few points in exploration, you should see some when you walk around the forest.

Any of the following can be used as string:

Hide Strap
Plant Fibres
Silk Thread
Spindly Taproot
Stinging Nettles
Yarn

Once you set up a permanent shelter and make a farm, plant fibres (from hemp and/or flax) is one of the most reliable sources of quick string.
Also, keep in mind that you can't use hide straps or nettles for string.

On a side note, if you're going for spindly taproot for string at first, it looks like a brown root sticking out of the ground. Just saying, because nobody ever told me, and I was trying for hours to find the fern that worked until I found a root.

You'll find taproots faster if you have higher exploration or perception.
Did you know that if you stare at the sun just as it sets, you see a green flash...
...and feel a sharp blow to the head, and hear the faint humming of me driving away in your new Tesla Roadster?
