If a mine is so deep into a cave that you can't detect it from the entrance, you don't want to find it. Walking that far through a cave every time you want to mine will be a huge pain and waste of time. You'll get more metal by picking cavebulbs for trade when walking to the mine than you will by mining.
Once a man has changed the relationship between himself and his environment, he cannot return to the blissful ignorance he left. Motion, of necessity, involves a change in perspective.
