Two Questions (Kiln and Trees)

Two questions:

How exactly does the kiln work? I right click the kiln, then I add some clay and wood, then left click light and nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

Also, how do you plant tree seeds (ex: elm seeds.) I tried using the same technique as for farming but it didn't work.
