Marking Yourself on the Map

How do you contribute to the world map? My area is pretty much unexplored except, serendipitously, the area I am in and I was wondering if I could help out.

Also, is it wise to mark your claim on the map if you are a new player?

Personal Claims aren't marked on the world map, only Village Claims.
